Protecting the tradition of the American family farm.
The drive for multigenerational success strikes a strong chord within our family business community. Comprehensive succession planning can be an exciting opportunity for owners to achieve an improved quality of life for themselves and for future generations.
Legacy by Design is singularly dedicated to succession planning in the agricultural community. Established in rural Northern California, we have client families, affiliations and advocates from coast to coast.
As Farm Journal's succession planning expert and resource, Kevin Spafford's "Leave a Legacy" columns have appeared in each month's Farm Journal and Implement & Tractor since 2006. Farm Journal, the nation's premier agricultural magazine since 1878, was named as one of the top 25 all-time business publications.
In May 2008, Farm Journal introduced the Farm Journal Legacy Project - a concerted, long-term effort to address the succession planning needs of America's farm families. Utilizing the strength of 13 media properties, the 134 year old legend, in collaboration with Legacy by Design, provides succession planning information and services to the agricultural community.
In January 2010, Pioneer Hi-Bred announced "a multiyear sponsorship to support the Farm Journal Legacy Project in addressing succession planning... (This will) kick off the single largest industry initiative of its kind in agriculture today." With Pioneer's philanthropic grant, the Legacy Project has now expanded to include a monthly national TV show, hosted by Kevin Spafford; a workshop series, weekly eNewsletter, and more. With Pioneer's generous support, the Legacy Project encourages action and celebrates success.
In 2011, the Farm Journal Legacy Project earned the presitigious Grand Neal Award, for "amazing depth" and editorial excellence.
Legacy by Design is honored to be part of the Farm Journal family.

Doug Mosebar, President - California Farm Bureau Federation (March 2007)
"We appreciate you being available for the annual meeting. Your comments... were perfect and reinforced what is needed and how it can be done. I have never had such a positive reaction to the afternoon program and several long time Farm Bureau participants the next day told me, "When I get home, I am calling all the kids together to see who wants to farm and settle things like they need to be done." That was a home run even if only a few do it right. Thank you for helping make it a successful program. I hope more go home and think about it after reviewing your book."
George Gomes, California Farm Bureau State Administrator (December 2006)
