Family Conversation

January 29, 2010, 1

Q: Great beginning show on Leave a Legacy ........but we missed a portion. Can you list Ms. Darling’s five points to keep in mind to start the conversation with family? Thanks, we look forward to more great information.

A: Thank you for asking. As a new outreach, Leave a Legacy is designed to provide good information and appropriate tools for farmers and agribusiness who like you have an interest in succession planning, generational transition and creating a lasting legacy. In each episode we will feature an expert serving the succession planning effort.

In the first episode, Molly Darling shared the five elements of a good family communication plan. She stressed the importance of transitioning from the parent to partner and emphasized that re-learning how to communicate will facilitate a smooth transition. The five points she emphasized in “Chalk Talk” were:

  1. Who’s at the table?
  2. Neutral ground
  3. Rules of engagement
  4. Plan for conflict
  5. Follow up
